Cut Out Any Excess Screen Time with a Digital Detox

You’ve probably heard all of the buzz surrounding digital detoxes, but perhaps, you’ve never done one yourself. Known as a period of time when a person refrains from using tech devices, like smartphones, laptops, and tablets, a digital detox can help you to enjoy real life to the fullest extent. By cutting out screentime temporarily, you will also experience better posture, sharper brain function, and improved sleep. Plus, digital detoxes are an excellent solution for anyone experiencing Internet-fueled anxiety or stress. If you aren’t quite convinced yet, we explore these reasons further below.

Reason #1: Technology can lead to stress.

You’re not imagining things – constant connectivity can make you feel burnt out and stressed. According to a study conducted by the American Psychological Association, a fifth of U.S. adults cited technology use as a significant source of stress in their life. Another study conducted by Swedish researchers echoes the sentiment, reporting that heavy technology use among young adults is linked to sleeping problems, depressive symptoms, and increased stress levels.

Reason #2: Digital devices can disrupt sleep.

Enjoying a good night’s sleep is hard enough without technology standing in your way. Yet, heavy device use, particularly before bedtime, can interfere with sleep quality and quantity. This is especially true if you use social media before nodding off. Doing so makes it more likely that you’ll experience anxiety, insomnia, and shorter sleep duration. To remedy this, be sure to log off your favorite sites at least one hour before bedtime.

Reason #3: Heavy device usage can change your brain.

If your children or younger family members are heavy technology users, be weary. A study published in the journal Child Development found that heavy technology use can lead to increased risk for mental health problems among adolescents, as well as symptoms of ADHD and/or conduct disorder. Even in adults, heavy social media use led to depression, loneliness, and overall reduced well-being. Reduce your consumption where possible, and you’ll cut your risk of these ailments substantially.
